Cyþþboxes and British counties

[adiht fruman]

I am amazed at the work you have done - very good indeed.

However, there is an issue with British counties, and Wikidata has not yet been brought up to speed with them. The word 'county' can refer several overlapping concepts. The plain, geographical county, also known as a 'historic county' or 'ancient county' is not an administrative eneity but just the way we place things geographically. There are also local government counties (or 'non-metropolitan counties' and 'metropolitan counties') which are often very different and ceremonial counties, which are different again. The historic counties date back a thousand years, right into the time that the language of this Wikipedia was spoken. They are the way I naturally describe any place.

Wikidata however is primarily set up with the data about administrative areas. At some point I will work out the best way to regularise the entries in Wikidata (it is all over the place at the moment). Not every hisotric county has an en:Wikipedia page nor a distinct Wikidata entry. On en:Wikipedia there may be a page for the name of the county, and it described two or three types in one article. Wikidata similarly lacks data entries for the historic counties so far - that is an ongonig project by the Historic Counties Trust.

British towns should, at least on this Wikipedia, refer primary to the historic county. The counties listed should also be the historic counties primarily. Hogweard (mōtung) 20:24, 10 Hāligmōnaþ 2019 (UTC)

I'm working on ensuring that every historic county has a distinctive record in Wikidata, with map (and flag if any). That should be done within a week or so, over odd lunchtimes and evenings. There are 92 of them in the United Kingdom. For towns and villages, it would need a a "historic county" statement or similar to be authorised by the admins I expect. Then and filling it in for thousands upon thousands of towns and villages is another task entirely! If an option is there to fill the county ('scir') in that can do the job. You have erred!

I have noticed that in an edit of yours you mistakenly provided the native name for France as 'Suomen tasavalta', which is in fact Finnish for 'Finnish Republic'. I have already corrected this, but would like to inform you regardless. 208.44.170.108 18:48, 3 Gēolmōnaþ 2019 (UTC)[reply]
