Gemǽnscipe Ingang

Do you know if there's a way to get the community portal to simply be a link to Gemǽnscipe Ingang instead of a redirect? I got the FromWikipedia to work, so it should be ok now. I'm slowly moving the interface over, since (a) I'm getting busier with schoolwork, and (b) I want to ease people into the OE words for everything. Translation of the week

Currently we have started a project on meta.wikipedia to get an article translated in as many wikipedias as possible every week. The article will be about a subject that usually gets rarely translated and has a lot of links to other subjects. Currently we have no-one to translate in your language. Accents/Macrons

I only created the macron version to showcase the differences in how the characters are displayed. I did the same for Gúþ betwéonan þǽm Rícum to show how they look in the page and the title (they look funny in the title). Direction of the Wiki

On a different note, are there any specific areas you think we should concentrate on, perhaps some monthly themes/collaborations to improve the wiki, say, to Englisc the wiki's shortest modern English containing articles, adding language articles, country articles, plant articles, etc.? I suggest doing what the Latin wikipedia did in it's early days, concentrating on articles relevant to the area/period. Don't bother with difficult articles like en:Helicopter, but stick to creating things like þagn and fixing Ēadweard se Ieldra. Nickshanks 08:19, 4 Winterfylleþ 2005 (UTC)

Macrons representing ommitted nasalations

Ang.wikisource

I noticed that the ang.wikisource was created today. I did not even realize that there had been a request for one. I invite you and anyone else interested to continue adding anglo-saxon texts to en.wikisource instead. I feel there is little advantage to keep a seperate wikisource for anglo-saxon. The editors there will simply have less time to work on actual texts as they must duplicate all the administrative work already being done at en.wikisource. Just getting the most basic policies and templates together takes a great deal of time. Since texts at wikisource are pretty much static it very condusive to having all Anglo-Saxon, Middle English, Scots, Archaic, and Modern English texts together. It will be more efficient to simply use the infastructure that has already been developed. In any event I plan to continue adding to the anglo-saxon collection at en.wikisource in order to create a variety of comparative texts. Duplicating this work does not seem to me the best direction to take. en:User:BirgitteSB

Byrialbot

If it is marked as a bot, its contributions will no longer appear in the recent changes page (unless you select the "show bots" link) so the "real" changes will be easier to spot. Folcmorþ

If you're looking for the genitive, it's folces in the singular (of the folk, folk's), folca in the plural (of folks, folks'). Folcum is the dative plural (for/to the people). Stillehæf

I belive you created the Stillehæf article. I was about to move it to "Sericus Garsecg" but I'm letting you yell an objection first.

"Se garsecg se mon hateþ Sericus" is in Ælfred's Orosius, from the Latin "Oceanus Sericus" ("Silken Ocean" or in context "Chinese Ocean").

We usually think of the Pacific as a western ocean unknown until Balboa stood on a peak at Darien, named first by Magellan emerging from the storm-tossed Straits, but of course it washes the ancient East too!

(Ishæf is found too as "Sarmondisc garsecg", though only in the context of the sea north of Russia. I'm not about to hit that one yet.)

At some point I will create an Orosius article, with a useful ISBN.

Thing of it is...

There really are no conventions at all regarding ȝ/ġ/g and ƿ/w. I have several OE books, all of which use various proprietary rules, within their own writings. The lack of ȝ and ƿ seems to be nothing more than modern users being conservative about an alphabet that they grew up with. The way I see it, a user should not (for example) write an article on the Japanese wikipedia if they do not intend to use Japanese writing. See what I mean?

In any case, for the longest time, it was just me editing this wiki, with James popping up once in a blue moon (who now doesnt care for me very much, ever since I tried to become an admin. guess he thinks he owns this wiki or something), then Hogweard comes about (who is the absolutely most inconsistent speller I've ever seen in my life), soooo I took it upon myself to establish some standardization into this wiki, and bring it up to par. Quite frankly, I think this wiki is now far better, as I've written a few lengthy articles, established and standardized alot of core categories and placed them into a proper hierarchy, putting up language links (thereby integrating Ang into the rest of the Wikipedia world), as well as putting Commons tags on various significant pages pertaining to modern topics.

Ultimately, I wont lie, I'm stubborn about ȝ and ƿ, but it's because I think it's silly to exclude them (if we're gonna do that, then let's just obliterate þ and ð while we're at it), and I find ȝ to be extremely useful. Hogweard's only complaint is having those letters in titles, when I've told him that we can create Redirects to solve the typing issue, for those who do not have/use custom keyboard layouts. I personally will be more than happy to create 50 redirects for each article on this entire wiki, according to each and every single possible spelling a person could conjure up. Please do not alter orthography

Ultimately we've decided to simply leave things as-is, that none of us will alter orthography, and that we will honor both ȝ/ƿ and g/w. Your alterations will only start that whole thing back up again. — ᚹᚩᛞᛖᚾᚻᛖᛚᛗ 19:11, 22 Solmōnaþ 2009 (UTC)

I do admit my error in mass-converting orthography initially, but my intention was innovation in what I saw as incorrect/erronous orthography. A compromise to the issue that I came up with, was multiple page versions, as is done on the Gothic Wikipedia. An example would be the Sciþþisc īsmæȝden page. If you'd like, I can also do this with various tables that we use, so that the table text can also match the style of each page. We settled the agreement (although not on that page, but rather through talkpages) noting that in some languages or wikis, standardization is not honored, or even abhorred, such as Scots, as well as the British/American spelling split of the English wiki. Me, I'd rather just honor multiple page versions so that we can get past all that mess, and continue progress. And so far, progress has been rather nice, if you've taken a look.
