Learning Old English

I'll be nice and use Modern English here ;) There are many resources available for learning OE, and there are 3 books that I recommend: The first is Stephen Pollington's First Steps in Old English (has a white cover). He expresses grammatical ideas in layman's terms, and gives plenty of practice exercises for you to do, so that you may learn through usage. He even creates his own simple phrases, not just using (often difficult to read) historic examples.

The second is Peter S Baker's Introduction to Old English (beige cover). He's a professor at the well-respected University of Virginia, and does the absolute best job of explaining why things are the way they are in OE than anyone else. However you'd just have to forgive his overuse of religious text samples.

The third, although not quite as vital, is Robert E Diamond's Old English Grammar and Reader (blue cover). It doesnt go very far with teaching OE, but it does provide alot of OE material to read, so it makes for a good read once you're ready to get started in applying what you learned.

There's also two newly-created wiki resources available: My Englisc Ƿicistede (where all material is written in OE, of any subject matter), as well as Hogweard's own Ȝemótstóƿ, primarily based in all things Anglo-Saxon. Also consider the new Eald Englisc google group email ring.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
