Fylkesvåpenet er tegnet av Arne E. Holm, etter seglet til Gaute Ivarsson, erkebiskop i Trondheim 1475-1510. Han var både kirkens mann og en dyktig politiker, og satt som leder av Riksrådet som i en periode styrte landet.

Motivet er to korslagte røde økser belagt med en rød korsstav. Kombinasjonen av økser og korsstav har vært tolket som bilde på geistlig og verdslig makt, men i virkeligheten er dette rent kirkelige motiver. Korsstaven er erkebiskopens verdighetstegn, og øksene er rikshelgenens eget merke - Olav den hellige ble drept med øksehugg
