How did 'Nashville' come to be rendered 'Gnashfyll'? That cannot be right.

The name is from Francis Nash, and the surname 'Nash' has never had a G in front of it. (Ultimately is comes from 'an Æsc'.) The 'ville' suffix is adopting a French suffix; I know of only three appearances in the Chronicle of 'ville' names: 'Vatteville' is rendered Watteuile, and we also have Stutteuile and Lungeuile.
