Bristol was always historically on the north side of the river Avon, and thus in Gloucestershire. Since I have no clue what Gloucestershire is in Anglo saxon, I'm not correcting it! 82.152.159.30 17:38, 10 Mǣdmōnaþ 2007 (UTC)

Spelling difference[adiht fruman]

En:History of Bristol gives the Anglo-Saxon name as Brycgstōw. I was not aware of any alternation or allophony between <i> and <y>, although I am hardly an expert. Are both spellings acceptable, or are one of the articles in error? 81.170.234.220 19:31, 11 Mǣdmōnaþ 2009 (UTC)

Spelling was based on pronunciation, which varied just as much as in present-day Germany for instance. Some writers simply spelled it differently. I might move this page to make use of the Y because it seems like it would be more accurate according to the dialect we make use of, but ultimately it doesnt matter either way. — ᚹᚩᛞᛖᚾᚻᛖᛚᛗ 22:41, 11 Mǣdmōnaþ 2009 (UTC)
