This is not Anglo-Saxon![adiht fruman]

A considerable part of the article is written in modern English.

Sorry, this is Bavarian. I just wanted to stimulate you to improve the text. This is a wiki! Hellsepp 00:29, 22 Se Æfterra Gēola 2011 (UTC)
What part of the text is modern English? I cannot see any anymore. There hasn't been for some months on this article.   Ƿes hāl!    04:57, 22 Se Æfterra Gēola 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Uigenna / Wīen[adiht fruman]

I hope no one minds if I contribute on Nīwum Englisc. I see this gewrit gives the hēafodburh as Wīen, while elsewhere on ang.wikipedia there is a gewrit on Uigenna, which must be a synonym. Would it be an idea to standardise on one or the other? Ƿes hāl! --Frans Fowler (mōtung) 22:27, 16 Winterfylleþ 2017 (UTC)

The city existed at the time Old English was spoken. Does anyone know an authentic, attested name for it? In Latin it was Uindobona, I believe, but I don't know of a mention of the city in Englisc, even though English missionaries preached there. Hogweard (mōtung) 16:22, 17 Winterfylleþ 2017 (UTC)
Got it, thanks to B&T and Wikisource. Ælfric's Homilies has:
IN LETANIA MAIORE
We rædað on bōcum, þæt ðeos gehealdsumnys wurde arǽred on ðone timan ðe gelāmp on anre byrig, ðe Uigenna is gecweden, micel eorð-styrung, and feollon cyrcan and hūs, and comon wilde beran and wulfas, and abīton ðæs folces micelne dǣl, and þæs cynges botl wearð mid heofonlicum fyre forbærned.

...unless of course 'Uigenna' in the text is the ancient Roman city of Vienna, now Vienne in France. That is actually more likely. Still, I have made the changes to the Ēastrīce article and elsewhere. Hogweard (mōtung) 12:41, 27 Winterfylleþ 2017 (UTC)
